Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry
While many people have heard of laughing gas, they might not realize the relaxing effects of inhaling this well-known gas. Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask placed over the nose and provides a fast and immediate effect. This form of sedation helps to calm the patient and eliminate concerns about the treatment. The sedative effects wear off almost immediately once the mask is removed from your face.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is a stronger form of sedation that helps to alleviate more serious dental anxiety. This sedation is given in pill form, with patients taking the medicine at least an hour before their appointment. While oral sedation promotes a deeper form of relaxation, it also has an amnesiac effect, helping patients forget the uncomfortable details of their dental treatment. Oral sedation takes several hours to wear off, and patients will feel groggy after treatment. For this reason, we recommend having a friend or family member drop you off at the clinic, then pick you up and take you home once your treatment is complete.
